dealing with it
or not dealing with it
i made this book of drawings under the ambiguous title of “dealing with it” as my thesis for my final semester. it’s roughly 50 pages of black line drawings on cream paper with a deconstructed white cover and tied in title card.
this book is the first real personal work i’ve done in school. it is supposed to be funny and vague and relatable and sad all at the same time. as well as totally self-involved *insert jerk off hand motion here*. some of the drawings have almost no meaning, some of the drawings have a lot of meaning. i wouldn’t call this a cathartic project, i would call it a jumping off point, a reminder and a placeholder for events and people, and thoughts or thought processes.
i’m happy to say it has received a lot of good feedback so far. i’ve mailed out a bunch to friends in other cities who are also dealing with it, people have bought them from me at shows, i’ve made numerous trades for other books and zines, and some of the drawings in this book were displayed at our grad show in which i won an award, much to my surprise (seriously, ask jared about that one).
a huge thanks to marco cibola for essentially letting me do whatever i wanted with this project and encouraging me the entire way. oh and “every shitty thing” i’ve experienced that pushed this concept into existence.
Buy the book, it’s great. Better than most.
EXCHANGING PLEASANTRIES - August 7-12 at the Black Cat, in Toronto.
